Welcome to Virgo Season (August 23-September 22)
I was inspired to write this post because I've been journeying through all the Zodiac signs and uncovering their unique archetypes and while doing so I wanted to honor what might be one of my favorite archetypes to work with the Witch.
In my opinion Virgo and Scorpio share this archetype but in different ways and in this post I am addressing how Virgo does just that.
Virgo is the archetype of the virgin, the maiden, the goddess, the earth witch, and the hermit in the traditional Tarot deck. Virgo is even considered to be associated with Chiron the wounded healer, since this sign is the ruling archetype of the healer, starting the healing journey through the signs, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius. These Virgo archetypes are all singular within themselves, they need no other. They can easily exist and conjure magic from within. They are the do-it-yourself masters. Martha Stewart, the DIY queen herself, has Virgo in her 10th house, the house of legacy and career, so there’s that.
I find Virgo to be very misunderstood, as I learned more I began to see how the healer was present in both Virgo and Pisces and how it relates to the witch archetype. It wasn’t until I began to dive deeper into all the archetypes of the zodiac that I really understood this sign better.
As I dug into astrology, I began to recognize that all the signs of the zodiac were just archetypes of our multifaceted nature as humans. At this time, I was really coming into my own sense of womanhood and gaining a sense of spirituality, where I stumbled upon multiple sources on the archetype of the witch.
I especially had a fascination with the Jungian archetype of the witch. I was always drawn to the witch archetype growing up and even was teased that I was a witch because I always loved astrology and magic, now looking back and realizing having my North Node in Pisces in my 10th house (again 10th house represents legacy- what you’re known for and what you've done) (in Pisces- a magic loving mystic) and having my south node in Virgo in the 4th, makes total sense to me that my interest went there.
Virgo is known as the healer, as in the potion slinging, tincture making, nurse, doula, doing the dirty work, sewing the ripped clothes or stitching up a wound, DIY, crafting creature. They are the earth-sided Mercury ruled fixers of the Zodiac. The ones with the sharp vision to spot the mend. They are keepers of earth wisdom and practical magic. They are HERE, just like Taurus, but they ACT on their present-ness. They’re able to help on a practical day-to-day level. They are the ones who know what ingredients are needed to make the salve to heal the cuts. They are the ones who put the puzzle pieces together, the ones who have an apothecary and a garden. They are the “Ouisers” from Steel Magnolias, the “Sallys” from Practical Magic and the “Hermione Grangers” of Harry Potter. They are magic makers, crafters and creators, fact checkers, fixers and educators. They cannot lie, and they heal with or without the nurturing touch, because it isn’t about kissing the boo-boo but healing it, and sometimes healing is painful.
One thing is for sure, you can always rely on Virgo to help in some tangible way. She is the earth witch, the goddess of the garden.
In my opinion there are 2 witch archetypes in the zodiac. Virgo is the earth witch and the healer, while Scorpio is the sorceress, “THEE Witch” of the Zodiac. Scorpio is different from Virgo in one major way and that is Scorpio will meddle with others in their magic and matters, where as Virgo helps others but from within oneself not from any meddling with the other. Working with others and their energy isn’t necessarily bad it is just tricky. You have to be careful not to cross lines and become manipulative, power hungry or vindictive, that’s where the evil can leak into the craft. Scorpio energy is masterful at seeing people for who they truly are at the deepest level of their potential. This gives natives with prominent Scorpio energy immense power to help heal others by shining a light on the others’ gifts. I will save the Scorpio archetype of "The Witch” for another post.
But the thing that both of these signs have in common is that they are both incredible healers, they both have an “M” as their astrological glyph, representative of medicine. Virgo has the tail of the M going back into itself because the medicine they work with can be found within, but helps heal from the outside in, like having sacred earth knowledge and then using the plants to help heal people through tinctures. Where Scorpio has the tail of the M going outward because the medicine they work with can be found within and helps heal others when they share the mysteries they see so clearly in other people with them, helping others heal.
So, a couple things can be gathered from this information. First, both Virgo and Scorpio are signs that represent the Witch archetype, and second, the definition of “Witch” really means “healer”. It isn’t the scary wart-faced, haggard old woman who scares little children, it is quite the opposite. A witch is a healer and a sorcerer belonging to oneself and no one else. She is one within herself and has the knowledge, power and craft to heal herself and others who are in need. A creature connected to her creation power, a symbol of pure resilience, strength, and magic.
Until Scorpio season..
